| Weaving in three dimensions
with Sarah Fortin in the October workshop. |
To start a new weaving year off on the right foot many of
the Richmond carpool people got together for a potluck
dinner. Of course, the conversation quickly turned to the
subject of weaving. How could it not? A loom sat among a
roomful of passionate weavers. We all inquired of one
another about what we had made over the holidays or what we
were currently working on, and asked questions ranging in
all areas of weaving. One topic I totally can relate to is
that of making mistakes. Begrudgingly we all had to admit
that it is almost impossible not to make something without a
mistake.
Alas, some of us make bigger mistakes than others, but I
will not linger on that point.
What I would like to emphasize is how much fun it is to be
with others who enjoy a similar passion. While I love my
other friends and family members, they quickly get a dazed
expression on their faces when I start talking about
weaving. They are happy for me that I like to do it and
happy for themselves that they reap the benefits, but that’s
where it pretty much ends. When socializing with other
weavers we can analyze structures, compare yarns, and share
techniques, while also eat yummy food. Oh what fun!
What was exceptionally nice to hear was that people thought
our guild was inclusive and welcoming to new and experienced
weavers. I believe that is very important. While we are
living in tough times, I think we are fortunate to have a
group of people who can get together and talk about making
beautiful things, leaving the chaos of the world behind for
just a few hours each month.
I’m looking forward to a new year and a new decade as a
weaver and a member of the guild, hopefully meeting new
people, and strengthening ties with existing members.
In regards to mistakes, there is a saying, “If you don’t
make mistakes, you don’t make anything.”
See you all soon!

Meeting Notes.... |
from Mary
Schwartz
October’s meeting was in the midst of a 3 day
workshop by Robyn Spady, “Extreme Warp Makeover”.
The Vermont guild was remarkable for the ability of
quite a few participants to make all the samples
during the workshop. There should be some good
show and tell from this one. Robyn was extremely
generous with her knowledge and really opened up the
possibilities for 4 shaft (and beyond) weaving.
